About to Pop: Phillip LaRue

Why He's About to Pop: Phillip LaRue began playing the guitar at age 16, when a case of mononucleosis sidelined the young athlete. He and his sister, Natalie, began writing songs and soon became known simply as LaRue. The duo signed a record deal and moved to Nashville, before making three albums and touring for four years. “I grew up on the road at that point,” recalls Phillip. “It was strange having people look up to me who were twice my age, but a fun way to see the world and find myself in the process.” Natalie later fell in love and married her beau, leaving Phillip to pursue production and songwriting on his own. Now the singer-songwriter is debuting his deeply personal lyrics on his solo album,
'Let the Road Pave Itself.' “I had always considered the solo thing but wanted it to be completely authentic in its expression,” he says. “So much music is focus-grouped to death for fear of not being successful, and that’s a tough place to be creative. I’m fortunate to have found a label that said, ‘You do what you do, and we’ll do what we do.’ That was my goal: to make a vulnerable record of my experiences.”
